April 1986: Catastrophe Unfolds in Ukraine

On April 25 and 26, 1986, the world witnessed the worst nuclear accident in history at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Located approximately 81 miles (130 kilometers) north of Kyiv, Ukraine, the catastrophe forever etched itself into human memory.

A Deadly Explosion

On April 26, 1986, a faulty reactor test resulted in an explosion that destroyed the Number Four reactor at the Chornobyl plant. The explosion released an enormous amount of toxic radioactive material into the atmosphere, contaminating vast areas of Europe and beyond.
